Sorry this post is so late. Busy time for me. I was very proud of our department on 10-1-08. We invited the Pink Ribbon tour to stop by our District 1 fire house. We all stepped up and purchased special pink duty shirts to wear for their arrival. The number of citizens who stopped to see the rig and it's trailer while at our fire house was amazing. We were able to reposition the engine and the trailer near the campus of Notre Dame and St. Mary's. A stream of survivors and family members of those…

Once again we've reached that time of year to push for checking batteries in smoke dectors, checking CO monitors but how about furnaces and chimneys? A little extra push in the area of chimney fires, furnace and chimney inspections could never hurt. We would hope that our friends and neighbors won't skimp on utilities maintanence because they have their noses glued to their laptops watching their portfolios melt...teaming up the HVAC trade to push for better public awareness to get their chimney…

Been a while since my last entry. Today is Thursday 9 October 2008 and it is 2030hrs as I write this. Earlier today I taught a Response to Critical Incidents in-service class for my agency then after that I met up with a friend and colleague of mine with the City of Lincolnton Police Department. My friend's name is Richard Taylor. He works the same rotation and same shift except he is with the City while I'm with County. Anyway, we started our PT at 1300hrs near the Post Office in Lincolnton. We…

My overall point is that school related incidents are not going to stop. Our mental health systems will remain dysfuntional themselves and we the emergency services will be the first contact as these tragic incindents will no doubt increase. With bereved and hysterical relatives looking for information about their loved ones and HIPPA laws tying our hands, it is imperitive that PTA's, School Boards and EMA's meet and make it clear that WE are not the bad guys for withholding information...we jus…

I have always taught my five children to be careful of jealousy because of its destructive quality, but I must admit I felt in recent weeks just a twinge of envy each time I watched T. Boone Pickens on television airing his views on the energy crisis. Pickens is a great American spending his own money to lay his ideas in front of the American people. And his ideas are sound and well thought out and very attainable - much more reliable than any plans to deal with the oil crisis that have come out…

I think I was only a freshman in highschool when I read "Report from Engine Co 82" (Bravo, Dennis) and I also read "Up the Down Staircase", being a kid from Long Island and Dad worked FDNY in the Marine Division, I had seen the Bronx when we went to visit relatives, South Street Seaport when Lindsay dedicated it, Dad talking about stories of the neighborhoods to avoid... Then I find myself working as a medic in the Bronx, Yonkers, Mt Vernon...it was alot of time to experience the smaller tragadi…

I remember back as a kid during Fire Prevention Week, waiting for the hook and ladder truck to show up at school and have the fireman hand out pencils, balloons and give us stuff to bring home to our parents. We learned not to play with matches and crawl on the floor if your house was filled with smoke. As we got older, stop drop and roll was the 'thing', a horrifying thought, being on fire, not to mention that if you didn't break rule # 1 you wouldn't be on fire in the first place. Parent educa…

LET THE BUILDINGS FALL AND SAVE THE BRICKS
Dennis Smith
Congress was right to kill the banking bailout bill, if even by a few vote. Our American banks and investment firms have some of the smartest people in the world working for them and they brought us to where we are. To begin with, they should never have been given the end-of-the-rainbow pot of de-regulation. That gave them the power to create something called derivitive products, which in most cases is one product that uses another underly…

TO HONOR 9/11 last week I spent some quality time with the firefighters of Martin County, IAFF Local 2959, and Palm Beach County, IAFF Local 2928. One spark plug, Martin County's Lieutenant Todd Tucker, put together a week of events to memorialize and remember 9/11, including a solemn Blue Mass celebrated by the Bishop of the Palm Beach Diocese, and a moving and patriotic flag ceremony. And, there were evenings of guest speakers. I went to two of these events and felt privileged by being there.…

It is Sunday 14 September 2008 at 0235hrs as I write this post. This past Friday 12 September 2008 I started riding with a new hire who happens to be training on my crew. The new hire's name is J. Witherspoon and he is no stranger to law enforcement - just new to Lincoln County Sheirff's Office. As it turns out his current FTO, R. Jeffries, also trained Witherspoon when they were both at the other agency i.e. Conover Police Department. I also have J. Lopez on my crew who is also from Conover P.…

9-11-08
Well another somber 9-11. As I was driving to my office @ ND, I felt such a sense of loss as I reflected on the events which happened just a few years ago and yet seem so far away. I can not help but think of those who kissed their children goodbye that morning, not knowing that would be the last time. I think how most, probably robotically, went through their daily ritual, boarding trains, buses and POV’s as the migrated from the safety of their homes to their offices at the tower or th…
